Michelin Guide American South 2026: how to use it

Updated November 3, 2026 · DafaMenu Editorial
Quick answer: Michelin announced its 2026 American South selection in Nashville in October 2026. It lists 266 restaurants, with three new One-Star restaurants (Dakar NOLA, So. Fox and Uberto) and 14 new Bib Gourmands. About 92% of the list (59 Bib Gourmands and 185 Recommended restaurants) has no star, so for most diners the useful part is the value and Recommended picks. Filter by distance first, check this year's status, work out the real check with tax and tip, and order direct for takeout.

The 2026 MICHELIN Guide American South was announced at a ceremony in Nashville on October 21, 2026. It is the guide's second year in the region. Most coverage leads with the three new starred restaurants. But 22 of the 266 restaurants on the list have stars. The other 244 are Bib Gourmands and Recommended restaurants, and those are the ones most people can actually eat at this month. This guide covers what changed and gives you a simple way to turn the list into real dinner plans.

What was announced

According to Michelin's announcement, the ceremony took place at The Pinnacle in downtown Nashville. Rough Draft Atlanta reported it on October 21, 2026, and lists the area covered as Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and Atlanta and its metro area.

The headline numbers from Michelin:

Michelin also gave four special awards: Exceptional Cocktails to Ally Bowen (Miscellanea Spirit House), Sommelier to William Mellon (manna), Outstanding Service to Jared Patterson (Little Betty Steak Bar), and Young Chef/Culinary Professional to Héctor González-Mora (The Story of "Mi Cariño").

Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guide, said the inspectors found "not only exciting momentum in established dining destinations" but also "exceptional restaurants in smaller communities and unexpected corners of the region."

The number that matters for diners

Here's the arithmetic. 59 Bib Gourmands plus 185 Recommended restaurants makes 244 of 266. That's about 92% of the list without a star. Bib Gourmands also span 29 cuisine types, compared with six for the starred group. So if you want variety, or a dinner that doesn't need a special-occasion budget, the useful part of this guide is mostly below the star level.

Local reporting shows what that looks like. In Georgia, Rough Draft Atlanta lists new Bib Gourmands Summerland (Atlanta) and Tipsy Thaiger (Roswell). They join returning spots such as Bomb Biscuit Co., The Busy Bee, Fred's Meat and Bread and Heirloom Market BBQ. In Asheville, Fox Carolina lists Little Chango, Luminosa and Mother as Bib Gourmands, plus a dozen Recommended restaurants, from Sunny Point Café to Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse.

A decision table: which distinction fits tonight

A five-step method to turn the list into a plan

  1. Filter by distance before distinction. Start with the restaurants within a reasonable drive. Then sort by distinction. A Bib Gourmand 15 minutes away is often a better Tuesday than a starred room two hours away. Michelin itself says this year's picks include "smaller communities and unexpected corners of the region."
  2. Check this year's status, not last year's. Distinctions change. Rough Draft Atlanta reports that Superica and Table & Main went from Bib Gourmand to Recommended this year, that several Atlanta restaurants dropped off the list, and that Nadair, a previously listed restaurant, closed in June. Before you go, confirm the restaurant is open and look at its current menu on its own website.
  3. Price the meal yourself. Michelin's "great value" wording is a guide, not a price promise. Add up what you would actually order, then add tax and tip. For example: two dishes listed at $16 and $24 come to $40. With an 8% sales tax ($3.20) and a 20% tip on the pre-tax total ($8), the check is $51.20, which is 28% above the menu prices. Use your local tax rate. Doing this once tells you whether a "value" pick fits your budget.
  4. Go early in the week, or early in the evening. Newly recognized restaurants can get busier right after a list comes out, so midweek and early seatings are your best chance. If it's full, our guide to getting a table at a fully booked restaurant covers waitlists, bar seating and cancellation windows.
  5. Order direct if you're taking food home. Some Bib Gourmand and Recommended restaurants offer takeout. When you order on the restaurant's own website or by phone, you see its own menu, prices and pickup times, and there's no third-party app between you and the kitchen if something goes wrong. Our guide to ordering direct from local restaurants walks through how to find a restaurant's own ordering link.

What the list does not tell you

If you're going to a starred restaurant

For the three new One-Star restaurants, and for the region's Two-Star restaurant, plan the way you would for any tasting-menu meal. Expect a set format, ask about dietary needs when you book, and read the deposit policy. Our tasting menu guide explains what to expect and how to pace the evening. Uberto is in Gay, Georgia, not in a city, so plan the drive as part of the evening.

The short version

The 2026 American South list is mostly a list of everyday restaurants. About nine in ten are Bib Gourmand or Recommended, not starred. Use the stars for occasions and the Bibs for regular nights out. Check every restaurant's current status before you go, work out the real check including tax and tip, and order direct when you're taking food home.
